Nature wrote some of the most beautiful stories in the hilly area of the micro-region of Pounje, where the Una, a river that means life there, meanders through the valley. Hrvatska Kostajnica, a city that was named after chestnuts, was established on an islet in the middle of the Una River. The sweet autumn chestnut harvest is abundant in the surrounding forests, so don't hesitate to head out on a picking excursion if you find yourself there in the autumn months. If you manage to organize your trip during the October weekend when the traditional, famous chestnut festival is held, even better - you will get to know them even better!
The dense chestnut forests are perfect for walking, hiking, and cycling. You will see the entire landscape - the city with the Zrinski Old Town fortress, Una Valley, and surrounding forests at the palm of your hand if you reach the peak of Čukur hill. Have a look at the view there through the large, cracked photo lens - a memorial monument "Broken Landscape" placed in memory of Gordan Lederer, a photographer who took his last pictures from that viewpoint before he was killed. Besides its incredibly beautiful landscape, tourists are attracted to the southern part of continental Croatia all year long by many sports, entertainment, and gastronomic events.
